Export and Import Markdown with Skyboot AI Markdown

Skyboot AI Markdown exports WordPress content to Markdown files and imports Markdown back as native Gutenberg blocks. Use it to feed content to AI writing tools, keep backups, move content between sites or write in your own Markdown editor.

How do I export WordPress posts to Markdown? #

Go to AI Markdown > Export:

  1. Select post types: posts, pages, products or any other type.
  2. Set content filters: post status (Published, Drafts, Pending, Private or All) and category.
  3. Choose an optional date range and the package format: a ZIP archive (one .md file per item) or a single combined document.
  4. Choose which front matter fields to include (title, author, publish date, modified date, SEO title, meta description, focus keyword, full URL). For a combined document, choose a page separator (---, ***, ===, <!-- PAGE BREAK --> or your own).
  5. Click Start Export. Content is processed in batches, so large sites do not time out. When it finishes, click Download Exported File.

File names use the post slug or the post title (Settings > Export/Import Filename Format). When two posts would get the same file name, for example two drafts with the same title, the second file gets the post ID added (same-title-123.md), so no post is lost.

Export files are stored in a protected folder and deleted right after download, or after one hour if nobody downloads them.

How do I export a single post? #

In the editor, the AI Markdown Tools box can download the post as a .md file or copy its Markdown to the clipboard. In post lists, use the Export Markdown row action, or select several posts and choose Export as Markdown (.md ZIP) from Bulk actions.

How do I import Markdown into WordPress? #

To load Markdown into the post you are editing, upload a .md file in the editor’s AI Markdown Tools box. The content is loaded into the editor. Review it and click Update.

For a bulk import, go to AI Markdown > Import:

  1. Upload a .md file or a .zip with several .md files.
  2. Choose the target post type, post status and author, and how external links are handled.
  3. Click Start Import. Each file becomes a new post.

ZIP imports skip files larger than 5 MB and stop after 2,000 files. A file without a title uses its file name as the title.

A combined export (one file with several posts) becomes one post per item. The importer splits it at each post’s front matter block, or at the export’s page separator (---, ***, ===== or <!-- PAGE BREAK -->) when the next post starts with a # Title line. A normal file is never split: its front matter, a --- rule in the text and anything inside a code block stay part of the same post.

What if Gutenberg shows “unexpected or invalid content”? #

Auto-Recover Gutenberg Blocks repairs block markup that would otherwise show the “This block contains unexpected or invalid content” message. Auto-Reload After Import reloads the editor after an import. When it is off, a confirmation window asks first.

FAQ #

How do I convert a WordPress post to Markdown? #

Open the post, find the AI Markdown Tools box in the editor and click download or copy. For many posts at once, use AI Markdown > Export. You can also open any published post’s Markdown version by adding .md to its URL.

Can I import Markdown files into Gutenberg? #

Yes. Each heading, list, table, quote, code block and image becomes a native Gutenberg block, not a single Classic block. FAQ sections become FAQ blocks in the format of your SEO plugin.

Does the export include SEO titles and meta descriptions? #

Yes, when you tick those fields in step 4. The SEO title, meta description and focus keyword are read from your SEO plugin.

Can I import a ZIP of Markdown files? #

Yes. Upload a .zip under AI Markdown > Import. Each .md file becomes a new post. Files larger than 5 MB are skipped, and the import stops after 2,000 files.

Who can export and import content? #

Users with the Export content or Import content permission. Administrators always can. Imports are limited to post types the user is allowed to create. See Permissions.
