AI Markdown > AI Analytics shows how AI assistants use your WordPress site: which AI crawlers read your pages, which pages they open while answering someone, and how many people click through from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and other assistants. Every crawler visit is checked against the vendor’s official IP list before it is counted.
What do the numbers mean? #
| Card | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Live answer fetches | ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User and similar: an AI opened your page while answering someone. This is the closest signal to a citation. |
| Visitors from AI | People who clicked a link to your site inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok and other assistants |
| AI search crawls | OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, DuckAssistBot and others updating their answer index |
| Google & Bing crawls | Googlebot and Bingbot. Google’s index feeds AI Overviews and Gemini, and Bing’s index feeds Microsoft Copilot |
Each card compares the selected period (7, 30 or 90 days) with the period before it. Below the cards:
- Daily activity: AI fetches and visitors per day.
- AI crawlers: every crawler, its purpose, how it was verified, hits and last visit.
- Pages AI reads most: your best citation candidates, with their readiness score. Click a score to review and fix the page.
- Assistants sending visitors: each assistant’s share of your AI visitors.
- Landing pages from AI: the pages AI assistants link to and people open.
- Latest activity: every recorded visit, with its format (
htmlfor the normal page, mdfor the Markdown version). - Fake crawlers filtered: which crawler names were faked, how many times, and the last attempt.
Every table has a search box, sortable columns and pagination. Requests for a post’s feed, embed or AMP version are counted under the post itself.
How does the plugin know a visit is really from ChatGPT? #
Anyone can send a request that claims to be “ChatGPT”, so every crawler visit is checked before it is counted:
- IP verification. The visitor’s IP address is compared with the official IP lists published by OpenAI (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot), Google, Microsoft Bing, Perplexity, Apple and DuckDuckGo. Where a vendor documents reverse DNS checks, such as Google and Bing, that is used as a fallback. The lists are downloaded once a day. Behind Cloudflare, the real visitor IP is used, and only when the request truly comes from a Cloudflare server.
- Fakes are filtered. A request that uses a crawler’s name from an IP the vendor does not own is counted separately as a fake crawler and is never added to your numbers.
- No public list. Anthropic (Claude) and Meta do not publish crawler IP lists the plugin can check, so their visits are marked No public IP list. With Count IP-verified crawlers only on (the default), they are listed but left out of the totals.
- Internal traffic is ignored. Requests from your own server, localhost and private networks are never counted. A local or staging copy of your site therefore shows no data.
- Visitors from AI are counted by a small script (about 1 KB) that only reports a visit when the visitor arrives from an AI assistant or with an AI
utm_sourcetag (ChatGPT addsutm_source=chatgpt.comto its links). Each visitor counts once per page per day. Logged-in users and bots are never counted.
How does “Last seen” work? #
Each visit is recorded when it happens, together with its time. The dashboard reads those records when you open it, so it is always current. Nothing is fetched on a schedule except the crawler IP lists.
How do I exclude my own visits? #
Logged-in users are never counted. To also leave out your visits while logged out (for example when you click your own site inside ChatGPT) and crawler tests from your network:
- Open AI Analytics. The bar at the top shows Your IP address and whether it is counted.
- Click Exclude my IP. Click Count my visits again to undo.
To exclude several addresses or a whole network (office, home, VPN), enter one IP or range per line under AI Visibility > Settings > Exclude IP addresses from analytics, for example 203.0.113.0/24. Add my IP fills in your current address.
Exclusions apply from that moment on. Earlier numbers stay as they are, because the plugin never stores visitor IP addresses. If your internet provider changes your IP address often, exclude the range instead of a single address.
What are the limits? #
- Full-page CDN caching. A crawler request served entirely from a CDN cache (for example Cloudflare “Cache Everything”) never reaches WordPress, so it cannot be counted, and your real numbers are higher than shown. Cloudflare reports those requests in AI Crawl Control. Visitor counting works with any cache.
- Not a citation counter. AI assistants do not report when they cite you. Live answer fetches and visitors from AI are the best available signals.
What data is stored? #
- No visitor IP addresses, cookies or personal data. Only the addresses you add to the exclusion list are saved, in the plugin settings.
- Visits are grouped per day, crawler and page.
- Data older than the retention period is deleted automatically.

FAQ #
How can I see if ChatGPT visits my website? #
Open AI Markdown > AI Analytics and look at the AI crawlers table. OAI-SearchBot visits mean ChatGPT search is indexing your pages. ChatGPT-User visits mean ChatGPT opened a page while answering someone. Both are verified against OpenAI’s published IP list.
What is the difference between OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot? #
OAI-SearchBot crawls pages for ChatGPT search results. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a ChatGPT user’s question needs it. GPTBot collects data for training OpenAI’s models. OpenAI describes all three in its crawler documentation.
Why are Claude visits not included in my totals? #
Anthropic does not publish an IP list for its crawlers, so the plugin cannot prove a Claude visit is real. They are listed as No public IP list. Turn off Count IP-verified crawlers only if you want them in the totals.
Does AI Analytics work with Cloudflare? #
Yes. The plugin reads the real visitor IP from Cloudflare and checks that the request came from a Cloudflare server. Only pages served entirely from Cloudflare’s cache are missed, because those requests never reach WordPress.
Is AI Analytics GDPR-friendly? #
The plugin stores no visitor IP addresses, cookies or user IDs. It keeps counts per day, crawler and page, and deletes them after the retention period you choose. Check with your own legal adviser for your situation.
